The motivation for the design of a novel fly fishing rod handle was the observation that the majority of fly fishermen, while casting with traditional fly rods, are holding their hands partly on top of the reel seats. This feels uncomfortable. When one combines this with a sweaty hand or sun lotion soaked cork handle, which both require extra force from your grip to prevent the rotation, it is easy to understand where we got the idea to design more ergonomically viable fly rod handle - one where the handle would extend on top of the reel seat and which would help us to have a firm and easy grip.
During the design process it became evident that the cross section of the more ergonomic handle should not be round but rather a shape of an egg. It would make the handle fit better to angler’s hand. While shaping the handle and looking for the visual outlook, the cross section profile started to resemble letter D. Hence the name D-shape. Markets have naturally seen some earlier experiments regarding more ergonomic fly rod handles dating back all the way to 1950’, but the major breakthrough has not happened yet. |
